Today is my BMF birthday – I've been there for a whole year.

why I hate the gym

August 15, 2011

Tonight I did the thing I have always said I would never do: I joined a gym.

I'd always been concerned they were places full of "you'll never be as good as me" types looking down their noses at us lesser mortals.

Firstly, the reason behind this seemingly mad decision.

I've been doing a lot of cardio for nearly the last year, mainly in the form of 110+ hours of BMF, but also supplemented with over 100km of running in between.  It has done me a huge amount of good, I am fitter, stronger and leaner than I ever have been, but I've seemingly reached a bit of a plateau whereby my strength is what is letting me down now.

So with that backdrop, I've taken on a personal trainer to sort me out with some training using free weights so that I can beef up my core strength. And obviously that means either buying a shed load of weights, and finding a shed to store them in; or joining the gym and using theirs.

Tonight was my gym induction with a couple of others, so that I am ready to go and kick arse after my first session with Andy the PT next weekend. You join us as we enter the main room:

Trainer: Ok, so we have three areas; free weights, cardio and resistance.
Us: Ok
Trainer: So here are the cardio machines – you've all used them before?
Me: Er, no.
Trainer: (looks shocked) Really?
Me: Yes.
Trainer: (hesitates) Ok then, (invites girl newbie onto treadmill) so you can hit the quick start button and then adjust the speed, or there are these other modes you can use… (gesticulates at the buttons) [Here endeth the treadmill lesson]

We move off the treadmill.

Trainer: (waves arm) Ok the bikes, cross trainer and rowing machine are all the same in terms of operation. Well the rowers are different, but don't worry about that.

We then get a quick tour of the resistance machines (which was fine in fairness) and then finally the free weights (hurrah!).

Trainer: So here are the free weights, up to 10kg on this rack, above 10kg over there, barbells there and other weights over there. Make sure you put them back when you're finished.

Me: Oh.

There you go. I've been a member of the gym for almost 15 minutes and the first person I have dealt with was definitely suffering from dodgeball syndrome. Can't wait for Andy to get my programme sorted out, so I can do my own training without having to deal with the "you'll never be as good as us" brigade.  Maybe I was expecting too much, but really, she didn't need to turn her nose up when I said I had never used any cardio machines before…

Sunday: Boxing cardio class

Monday: BMF
Tuesday: 5.25k lunchtime run at almost race pace (2s/km off)
Wednesday: BMF

Am absolutely shattered now. BMF quiz tomorrow night and no more training 'til BMF on Saturday morning. Might cycle over there.

Also will be seeing my new personal trainer at some point over the weekend – can't wait! :D

Stepping up the awesome

August 8, 2011

Today I spoke to a personal trainer about what I can do to step up my core strength as I don't think cardio alone will get me much further without playing a very long game.

So that combined with a cautious venture into the Paleo diet (thanks Omar!) should make for some extra awesome all round.

(If I haven't said on here before, I started BMF, with the single motivation of "Be more awesome" and I feel this is a logical progression of that) (I'm not planning on quitting BMF any time soon, just supplementing it with some other stuff)

It’s barely gone past midday…

July 23, 2011

…and all of this awesome stuff has happened so far this weekend:

Saw Matt last night for a well overdue catch up and:
  • Watched Wanted – sexy, mindless and violent action, perfect 'leave your brain at the door' stuff;
  • Scarfed an entire large Dominos Texas BBQ pizza;
  • Consumed a heady combination of lager, vanilla vodka, kumquat liqueur and gin;
  • Watched "the raver" episode of Spaced and a couple of episodes of Police Squad.
Got up today a little the worse for wear and:
  • Had a winning breakfast of squash, painkillers, custard doughnut and double espresso (KABOOM);
  • Guilted Claire (also hungover, but from a separate drinking incident) into coming to BMF;
  • Cycled the 7 miles on my beautiful single speed;
  • Did the BMF as a red (due to hangover) but managed to be the quickest of the reds for the majority of the session;
  • Claire LOVED my bike (letting her have a quick go on it was part of the incentive to get her along);
  • Rode home and overtook a Hipster kid on his fixie AND someone on a normal geared bike…
  • … all while in my BMF vest and shorts, therefore providing an impromptu gun show for the good people of Bristol*
Still to come this weekend:
  • Meeting baby Elliot when he comes home from hospital;
  • Going out in town tonight hopefully;
  • Maybe a run tomorrow morning;
  • Roast dinner;
  • Sunshine.

(* Yes, I'm vain, but who cares?!)

I've just become an uncle for the second time. My brother and his wife have just given birth to a baby boy, Elliot.

I'm so very, very happy for them.
(And the timing of the news was good for everyone in the office, as I was stood next to the cakes in the supermarket…)

Awesome news <3

Awesome kids

July 20, 2011

I’ve just got back from my last Scout meeting of the term until September, which in a way is nice, as I can go to BMF on a Wednesday when there is an all-green class; but also it’s a shame as the kids in my unit (ages 14-18) are awesome frankly and totally worth giving up my time for.

But it’s good to have a break from it, plan the new programme over the summer and sort out some awesome stuff for next term.

And as a goody-two-shoes footnote, giving up your time for free can sometimes feel a bit thankless, but when it’s good, it’s awesome :)

3-Way Street

June 8, 2011

“By summer 2010, the expansion of bike lanes in NYC exposed a clash of long-standing bad habits — such as pedestrians jaywalking, cyclists running red lights, and motorists plowing through crosswalks.

By focusing on one intersection as a case study, my video aims to show our interconnection and shared role in improving the safety and usability of our streets.

The video is part of a larger campaign I created called ‘3-Way Street’. Please see for more details.”
