Empire of the Sun – Walking on a Dream

Published on June 16, 2009

Quick CD review (yes actually bought on physical media!).

I picked up Walking on a Dream for about £7 the other day having heard the brilliant single ‘We are the People’ on the radio a few times over the last couple of weeks and rather liked it for its “Sunset at a festival or other hazy alcohol filled summer evening” feel. I’m sure you’ll get what I mean:

Anyway, it would be great if the whole album carried on in a similar vein, which I suppose it does to a certain extent, but just not as well. ‘We are the People’ is the forth track on the album and it’s fair to say that tracks 1-3 (Standing on the Shore, Walking on a Dream, Half Mast) are also really good too, but the rest just aren’t as involving, they are perhaps a bit more introverted and frankly, just less tuneful.

So, in summary, as long as you are prepared for that the wonderful “Hazy festival sunset” moment to only last four songs, then go ahead, but sadly the rest of the album whilst ok, doesn’t match the promise of the opening four tracks. So if you can get the CD for cheap, go ahead, but otherwise I could have easily lived with just downloading (legally!) the first four…

I thought there would be a reason why i’d listened to it once and then not gone back to it since… nice review.

Loved that track too. Had a quick listen on Spotify to the album and it just didn’t seem to grab me.

I bought a track on iTunes, that’s enough for now.
