But I’ve got to start somewhere I guess. Serves me right for not doing any running for best part of two months off.

I blame Omar

August 21, 2010

I’ve just signed up for (including a 3-month un-refundable Direct Debit) to British Military Fitness.

I did my freebie ‘taster’ session this morning, which comes with the enticing offer that if you sign up properly within 24 hours, then the £35 joining fee is waived. I suspect this serves two purposes:

1. You sign up while you are still buzzing from all the endorphins after the taster
2. You sign up before everything hurts a day after the session (I will confirm this tomorrow)

I’m not going to say anything about what I did at the session or what I thought of it, because if I don’t stick at it, then not only will I be out of pocket to the tune of over £100 (by the time you include DD and the running shoes I bought in preparation for it), but I’ll also look like a prize idiot if I write an entry saying how great it was.

So we’ll see how this all goes…

Oh. And it’s all his fault that I went in the first place.

true or false? (part 2)

Apologies it has taken so long, but here is the follow-up to this entry from the other week. Thanks to everyone who commented, I will press on with the answers, scores at the end!

true or false? (part 1)

June 3, 2010

So I’ve been online for a while now in various places, but how much do you, the reader actually know about me? How many of the statements below are true? (or, indeed; false?)

1. I am left-handed
2. I had a racing pigeon at home when I was younger
3. I have driven a Ferrari 360
4. I chipped my tooth in a swimming pool aged 16 and it still isn’t fixed
5. I went drinking with a band in Las Vegas after a gig they performed
6. I have a pierced nipple
7. I have performed in a production at the Bristol Hippodrome
8. I started training as an architect, but never quite made the cut
9. I’ve had two of my exes run away to sea
10. I was a VIP guest on Robot Wars

Ok folks, answers in the comments and I will reveal all in the near future.

(And people visiting this from facebook – the comments form won’t bite, it only asks for your email address to discourage spammers and goes nowhere else. Go on, you know you want to…)

Caaaaaaaaaaake!, originally uploaded by rob78.

I’ve had 100+ views on the blog today – if anyone could enlighten me as to who they are, or why they have visited, then I’d love to know…

(the picture above is irrelevant, but for what it’s worth, the banana and walnut cake was lovely)

office frustration

October 28, 2009

A couple of little coincidences happened today.

Firstly my boss is considering upgrading her Blackberry and was toying with the idea of getting her old one set up for me to use so I can join the leagues of other users always connected to their email.

And secondly, for the second time in ten years at my company, I drove home, then remembered something critical that I had to finish and email out tonight.

The annoyance of remembering the thing I forgot to do lead to this (somewhat angsty) tweet.

Which in turn resulted in a couple of replies from WiseguyRussell and Kiff76 the gist of which was “Why don’t you sign in remotely and sort it out?”

And whilst I can sign in and access my email from afar, there are a number of things I can’t do, such as accessing our files and more importantly in this case getting to the hand amended report on my desk that I needed to make the changes to and then email out to the client.

With the exception of needing the hand-amended report on my desk (which no amount of earth-based technology could recover without a personal visit to the office) both WgR and K76’s responses and a few follow up tweets made me realise that I am somewhat in the dark ages in terms of connectivity to our office.

Do I really want to be able to access all our files and emails at any time of the day? I don’t think I do. Every now and then I work late and then once in a while I work stupidly late. But normally, I leave the office and my connection to my work ends then and there. Whatever it is, it can wait ’til tomorrow.

Unless of course a client is going into the office at 8am to collect an email I’ve sent them the evening before…

(Also – a Blackberry Curve 8300 – should I hold out for something better anyway??!)

Spurred on by a flurry of blogging activity recently (well a post from me and two from Jenn) (in addition to the usual quality output from Omar) I’m trying a new mobile interface using the wphone plugin. So far, so good – lets see if it posts…!

Maslow reinvented

September 11, 2009

So, it turns out that quite a few people have heard about Maslow and his hierarchy of needs. I learned the way of the pyramid when I was doing my MSc and I get the impression that it is a staple of any psychology course, at almost any level.

Background lecture over, go and feast your eyes on this, the hierarchy of digital distractions.

Far too true in my case… oops.

it shouldn’t happen…

September 7, 2009

…on a first date.

About a month or so back I went out for lunch with a very nice girl, on a date, no less. It was a first date and for you the reader, that is all the context you need to know.

Anyhow, all was going well, until that is, about 25 tourists marched into the pub (which it transpires has a bit of local historical significance). It got worse as they were then led to the historic end of the pub (where we were sat) and then all peered through the historic window (about a metre away from my date).

Needless to say, the interruption didn’t do much for the conversation over lunch, although we soldiered on bravely, however, the tour guide then stopped and asked me when I was going to produce a ring to offer to my date…

World, please swallow me up.
That is all.

So my punishment for ignoring my poor blog for so long is…

To sign in and discover that I’ve got four plugins to update AND WordPress 2.8 is now ready to be installed.

Looks like I’ll be getting reacquainted with my FTP software then *sigh*
